SLP Freebies

Please download and distribute freely--these resources are for you!

***While many of the materials on this archive website are somewhat outdated, hopefully they can be a sort of starting point.  I still use some of these old handouts in my own practice, tweaking them as I learn new things.

For example, the Communication Tips handouts have been tweaked quite a bit based on new things I've learned, but the scaffold of it remains the same.  I'm also trying to learn to be a more neurodivergent affirming therapist (an ongoing process), which means I'm making some major changes to how I approach social communication in therapy (changes not reflected in the materials on this archive website).  Please feel free to take whatever is useful to you, and I encourage you to change things up as needed for your practice!  (Sorry I saved some of the SLP resources as PDFs; that makes them harder to edit.  Oops.)

Also, if you’d like an updated version of something, try emailing me at speakingwithkiki (at) gmail (dot) com.  If I don’t have updated info/handouts, I’ll try to connect you with someone who does.  :)  :)  :)

Cognitive Therapy resources
Pillbox Practice Worksheet (English)  This document has two pages:  one with instructions and one without instructions (so you can modify the level of difficulty for your patient or even use their own list of medications)

Pillbox Practice (Spanish)  This is more or less a direct translation of the English version (two pages).  The instructions and answers are the same on the first page.
The Housekeeping Game (English and Spanish)   This is a fun way to organize chores for patients who have goals for complex problem solving/home management.

Dysphagia Therapy Resources

Free Water Protocol Doodle  This handout explains how to safely apply the Free Water Protocol.
Double Swallow Trifold  This is just a simple handout for patients who benefit from a double swallow.  I fold it in thirds and leave it on the patient's bedside table or wherever they most often eat.  It has a bonus message promoting oral care!  :)

Ellyn Satter's Division of Responsibility for Feeding: this is a great way to establish healthy authority and boundaries at the table.

Jenny McGlothlin's Extreme Picky Eating website:  Jenny McGlothlin was my feeding therapy instructor in graduate school and she is an excellent resource for parents and SLPs seeking to understand how to help picky eaters!

SOS (Sequential-Oral-Sensory) Approach to Feeding:  Developed by Dr. Kay Toomey, this approach to feeding therapy is an excellent method for helping children with sensorimotor feeding disorders to eat well.  I attended an SOS conference in January 2018 and learned so much from Dr. Toomey and her colleagues.  This website also includes a link for parents to find providers who are SOS trained.  Providers:  please note that it is very important to receive SOS training before using any of Dr. Toomey's handouts or resources.  Feeding therapy is a very delicate situation with serious health consequences.  So be sure to register for the appropriate training before using the SOS feeding approach.
